This week, House Republicans passed a disastrous budget that would end the Medicare guarantee while protecting tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans, and put our economy and job creation at risk by slashing investments in education, innovation, and infrastructure. This budget cuts funding for programs that help the vulnerable, enable our children to afford college, and provide health coverage to those with long-term disabilities. And it puts millions of jobs and our economic recovery at risk as a result of drastic spending cuts, while extending the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy. This plan is bad for America’s seniors and the middle class andit fails to live up to our American values.
The Democratic alternative budget, which I supported, invests in a strong economy and asks everyone to contribute their fair share. It plans for a future where the Medicare guarantee is preserved and seniors’ health security is protected; a future where students who work hard, take responsibility for themselves, and get accepted to college won’t have to worry about whether they can afford to go; a future where we help businesses create millions of jobs here at home rather than shipping them overseas; a future where the deficit is reduced in a balanced and credible way, with everyone pitching in. Democrats will continue fighting to preserve that strong future for all Americans and ensure that the middle class and most vulnerable in our society are not left behind.
