This week, Republicans once again voted in favor of a budget plan that places the burden of deficit reduction on seniors, the middle class, working families, and the most vulnerable. Their radical plan would impact millions of Americans, including 9.6 million students who would see their Pell Grants reduced by more than $1,000 in 2014. These drastic cuts to education will harm our ability to properly educate our youth, out-educate our competitors throughout the world, and build a competitive workforce for our future.
Education has long been a priority of mine, which is why I have championed efforts to ensure that children in Maryland receive the best education we can offer. This week, I joined the Maryland State Department of Education and Judith P. Hoyer Foundation in recognizing excellence in Maryland’s early childhood education and family support programs known as Judy Centers. Maryland’s Judy Centers provide a full range of essential services for thousands of families who need them most, and they have made our state a leader in the integration of early childhood education with health and social service delivery. Democrats are committed to ensuring that these types of educational programs are available to children throughout our entire nation, so that they have access to healthy, safe, and nurturing environments in which to learn.
From early childhood to higher education, I am working to ensure that families and young people in our communities are aware of the many educational opportunities available to them. This Thursday, I am hosting the Fifth Congressional District’s 31st Annual U.S. Service Academy and Military Education and Career Forum, which brings together local students and representatives of the U.S. Service Academies, College ROTC Programs and recruiters. This event is open to the public and I hope to see you there.
