As we continue to highlight the need to avert sequestration, I encourage you to participate in a Twitter Town Hall to discuss this issue with myself and other Members of the Maryland Delegation. Tomorrow, from 4:00-5:00 p.m., you can participate in a conversation about how sequestration will impact you and your family. Follow me on Twitter at @WhipHoyer and submit your questions or comments to me by using this hashtag: #AskMDDems. If you do not use Twitter, you can e-mail your question to AskMDDems@gmail.com.
With only two days until sequestration is set to take effect, I continue to call on the House to take immediate action to avert these arbitrary spending cuts, which could have a devastating impact on our economy and national security. The White House released a report earlier this week, highlighting the harmful impact these cuts could have in Maryland this year alone:
o Approximately 46,000civilian Department of Defense employees could be furloughed.
o Around 200 teacher and aide jobs could be at risk.
o 800 fewer children could be enrolled in Head Start and Early Head Start.
o Over 9,000fewer people could receive job training and placement services needed to find employment.
o Around 770 fewer low income students could receive aid to help them finance the cost of college and around 440fewer students could get work-study jobs that help them pay for college.
o Our law enforcement community could lose over $300,000 in grants that support crime prevention and drug treatment and enforcement.
o Cuts to the STOP Violence Against Women Program could result in up to 500 fewer victims of domestic violence receiving services.
o Around 2,050 fewer children could receive vaccines for diseases such as measles, mumps, whooping cough, and the flu.
We must avert this irrational process with a balanced solution. I hope you will join me tomorrow to discuss this important issue during the Twitter Town Hall at 4:00 p.m. I look forward to your questions and comments.
