Earlier this month, we paused to celebrate the Fourth of July and recognize the independence of our nation and the sacrifices made by those who have fought and continue to fight to preserve our freedoms. In keeping with the independence theme, House Leaders unveiled an Energy Independence package aimed at lessening the nation’s dependence on foreign oil and cutting our greenhouse gas emissions. In the weeks ahead, we will be finalizing this legislation with the hope of passing it before August. For more information, see below.
This week, the House passed the College Cost Reduction Act, a significant accomplishment which represents the largest single investment in college aid since the 1944 GI Bill. This landmark legislation will make college more affordable for millions of students by increasing the maximum Pell Grant by at least $500 and by cutting interest in half on subsidized student loans over the next five years. It also continues Democrats' commitment to fiscal responsibility by including $750 million in federal deficit reduction. For more information, see below.
