This week, the House passed two major measures aimed at helping American workers and small businesses. On Tuesday, we passed the Small Business Contracting Program Improvements Act to expand federal contracting opportunities for small businesses. The second bill – the Trade and Globalization Assistance Act - improves services available through the Trade Adjustment Assistance program for workers who have lost their jobs as a result of increased imports or shifts in production out of the United States.

The House also moved forward on a package of appropriations bills that invest in the nation’s top priorities. This ‘priorities package’ will bolster our nation’s defense, keep our promises to our veterans, and invest in our country’s education, health and economy.  And, it will not increase the debt. We will vote in this package next week.

Also next week, the House will vote to override the President's veto of the Water Resources Development Act, which authorizes $180 million for projects to improve infrastructure and clean up the Chesapeake Bay and other Maryland waterways. In addition, we will consider the Homeowners' Defense Act, which ensures the availability and affordability of homeowners' insurance coverage to help prepare for and recover from damage caused by natural catastrophes.

The House will also soon take up a fiscally responsible tax relief bill that will protect 23 million American taxpayers from being hit with the Alternative Minimum Tax.  Protecting American taxpayers and being fiscally responsible are not mutually exclusive goals and Democrats have worked to ensure that this AMT “patch” does not add to the national debt.

As always, thank you for allowing me to share this update with you. If there is anything you wish to share with me or bring to my attention, please do not hesitate to contact my office.

Sincerely yours,
