Today, the House voted to pass a Continuing Resolution, which willfundour government through September 30th, the end of the current fiscal year, and ensure that the Federal civilian and military personnel in Maryland’s Fifth District can continue to work and receive their paychecks. I voted for this resolution, not because I agree with everything in it, but because our choice in this divided government is whether we will come together, work together, and try to make the best possible agreement together. I think that is what you, my constituents, and the American people, expect us to do. Moving forward, we need to work very hard to get our deficit under control and constrain spending so our government is sustainable over the long term, but we need to do so in a rational, smart, effective way that continues to grow our economy.
This afternoon, following passage of the CR, we began a critical debate on the future of our Nation and the direction it is going. The Republican Budgetunder consideration by the House will harm job creation at a critical point in our recovery, and hinderour ability to out-innovate, out-educate, and out-build our competitors. It ends Medicare as we know it, shifting the risk and burden of rising health care costs to seniors. The Congressional Budget Office confirms that under the Republican plan, seniors’ costs will rise significantly compared to what they would normally pay. For example, a Maryland senior entering Medicare in 2022 would pay $6,400 more under the Republican plan than if they were entering today’s Medicare program. This budget resolution also dismantles Medicaid through block grants to states, which would increase the cost of nursing home care for seniors. This budget places our fiscal burdens on the backs of our Nation’s working families and seniors, and I will not support it.
